It's hard to believe that 2011-12 will not only be my fourth year at Laurier, but also my fourth year working for The Cord. I got my start as a shaggy-haired first-year who wandered into the Student Pubs office after the Get Involved Fair. I was introduced to my eventual mentor Lauren Millet and before I knew what had happened I was a sports writer. I plugged away for a few months, covering just about everything Laurier sports had to offer and then I was told to apply for the Sports Editor position. As a lowly first-year, naturally I didn't think I had a shot, but I got the job and I liked it so much I stuck around for a second stint as Sports Editor last year.
My two years in charge of the sports section treated me well to say the least. I got to travel all over Canada, interview people as famous as Vernon Wells, and even win a national award (last year I won the John H. MacDonald student journalism award in the sports writing category). This year I've traded in arenas and stadiums for board rooms and council chambers as I move into the more serious, more important world of news. As much as I'll miss covering sports, I'm excited for the changes that will come with being News Director.
Now for some background info. I'm originally from Oakville, Ontario, but I swear my parents aren't rich and I'm not a douchebag. I grew up playing almost every sport until my lack of talent and commitment caught up with me. When a broken ankle in grade 12 ended my football "career," I picked up this writing thing and came to Laurier as a Comm major, adding English and a history minor along the way. Where will this whole thing take me? Who knows. (Come say hi when I'm working at McDonald's 2 years).
